Other minorities there are looked higher upon than the Natives. It is a shame because their culture is so rich and wonderful. I think their way of life was dispised by the whites because of their nomadic nature, the fact that their religion was steeped in nature and had many dieties, and the fact that (dispite their often violent wars), they were a peaceful people. The thing I hate about the reservation is what it has done to this proud race. It has forced them to depend on a government that hates them, that made them alcoholics (much of white/indian trade was dependant on whiskey), forced assimilation, and has done everything in its power to keep them down. When they do attempt to take steps to improve their situation in the form of Casinos, cigarette sales, and the like, the government responds by attempting to change the rules (breaking treaties has been replaced by legalized exthortion in the form of taxation). Their future lies in their children and passing on all the wonderful traditions of pride in yourself, respecting your elders and your community, something we white folks could stand to learn as well. I've already seen a lot of this here in Minnesota up by Leech Lake, a reservation with similar problems to Pine Ridge. Young people who are tired of poverty, drugs, violence, and are doing something about it by going to school, learning skills, and going back to the Res to help their community. Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents.Aliecathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15118339330931883621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9527130.post-1151213955411422562006-06-24T23:39:00.000-06:002006-06-24T23:39:00.000-06:00That was an incredible post. "Why do we pay taxes, Justin."

...

"No, we pay taxes because the government has the gun."

I'm also confused as to why they would prefer the name Indian, when they were given that name by the same people that named this country America. (Stupid navigation.) I would think they should hate both names equally.

Ahh, American history. It was staffed by a slough of recreationists portraying the roles of Native Americans and colonial settlers.

Kind of being a smart-ass, my friend asked one of the colonial settlers, "What happened to all the Native Americans?"

The settler's reply was, "God killed 'em."Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03200336493297390233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9527130.post-1151020871939921202006-06-22T18:01:00.000-06:002006-06-22T18:01:00.000-06:00Beautiful post Amber.
