One of the things that has been really great about having the girls is that I get to introduce them to books and movies I loved when I was a kid.
I went to Barnes & Noble the other day to look for a book that Abby's school had recommended. They didn't have it, but that didn't stop me from buying $50 worth of OTHER books. What, I was just wandering around and I kept seeing cute books, and then I remembered some that I had liked as a kid, so I looked for those. And I found them. Seriously, what adult my age didn't read "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs"? Or "Miss Nelson is Missing"? I totally remember those, so of course I had to get them. The girls loved them, along with a NEW book about a little cat who thinks he's a crime fighting chihuahua.
Then I was at Office Depot yesterday waiting for my boss, and I saw a shelf of $10 movies, and what just happened to be on there? "The Neverending Story". So OF COURSE I HAD TO BUY IT. Beth and I used to love that movie as kids, and we even saw the horrible sequels. Of course we were cynical jr. high kids by the time the second one came out, and so we sat in the back of the theater giggling and providing a running commentary on how bad the movie was. However, it never diminished the greatness of the first movie, so I'm excited for the girls to see it. We also have "Annie" and "A Chipmunk Christmas", which the girls like.
Which brings me to my point. What books and movies do you remember loving as a kid?

I've always loved The Velveteen Rabbit. Shel Siverstien poetry books like Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic. The Giving Tree. Little Bear, and ones about a hedgehog named Francis.
The Princess Bride. Mary Poppins. Used to watch Cinderella at my friend's house on a regular basis too.
I dont' think these books are around any more, but there were some really good stories. There was

How much fun! I can't wait to do this when I'm a mom! For me, the "kid" classics were ET and The Wizard of OZ (though both scared the crap out of me, too!). And my favorite kid book--even though it's probably too young for them--is "I Love You Forever." I still love that book.
I LOVE "The King With Six Friends!" I can't believe someone else actually knows it!! I have done the same with Lexie - and as much as she grumbles, she usually ends up enjoying the books or movies I "make" her read or watch. We had to do all the Beverly Cleary, of course, and Judy Blume (except "Forever" - what a DIRTY book!! Tee hee!!). And movies? Now that she is in jr high, we're getting more advanced. Anything John Hughes - she's met Jake Ryan, and watched people smoking pot in the library (an athlete, a prom queen, etc and so on), saw the BEST serenade with a boombox blasting "In Your Eyes" and recently we watched (wait for it...!) "Nine To Five." What a hoot!!!! Kids are so much fun. Keep enjoying them, Amber!!!
Everything before the 8th grade is sort of a blur. I remember Dr. Seuss when I was much smaller and those Bears (Berenstein?) and a few others. But I was 5 or 6 when I liked those. After that, I'm not sure.
The Owlstone Crown was a great book. So was Stone Fox, Where The Red Fern Grows, Bridge to Terabethia.
Withches, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. (Apparently, I like Roald Dahl.)
I sort of forget the rest.
I read every single Hardy Boys book at least once. Even the Case Files. And most of the Nancy Drews.
I don't remember watching any movies.
I am very very old and have a poor memory, but I do remember Where the Wild Things Are and Harriet the Spy...
I read the Fudge series of books as a kid (last one I read was Fudgeamania). Always enjoyed them. I also read the Ramona books, even though I couldn't stand the main character.
Movie-wise I was a Disney kid, even when I was a teenager.
The Encyclopedia Brown books.
